Billingshurst’s heavy clay is exactly why new borders here are worth doing properly: dug out, shaped, improved with compost so roots can get through, and covered with weed barrier so the planting gets established without being swamped. A border prepared like that is much easier to keep on top of with regular visits afterwards.
